Jesus & Hillel were very similar in outlook. There are people walking around who claim descendancy from him, too. I enjoyed your post ( = I agree with a ...Hi Mumon,<br /><br />I enjoyed your post ( = I agree with a most of it!).<br /><br />Just on a point of information, the Martin Buber quote/paraphrase was originally recorded as a saying of the Talmudic Rabbi, Hillel the Elder (c.110 BCE, died 10 CE), whose more liberal ideas contrast with those of his near contemporary, the traditional, hard-line Rabbi, Shammai.<br /><br />The full quote is: <br /><br />"If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?" <br /><br />and comes from the Pirkei Avot, "Chapters/Ethics of the Fathers", included in the Talmud.<br /><br />Hillel is also credited with: <br /><br />"That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary.
