Never take a ravenously hungry 4 year old to a temple; he will without hesitation ask for food, and if the monks are average monks, they live rather sparsely and will indeed give the shirt off their backs to anyone who asks.
Money of course is always accepted, but I imagine it's a hassle for people to have to replenish what they didn't anticipate using anyway, so feed the kid first.
