The Religious Right Gets Repugnant in Amaraillo Texas

Think Progress has news of what can only be called a Christian hate group.

An evangelical Christian hate group called “Repent Amarillo” is reportedly terrorizing the town of Amarillo, Texas. Repent fashions itself as a sort of militia and targets a wide range of community members they deem offensive to their theology: gays, liberal Christians, Muslims, environmentalists, breast cancer events that do not highlight abortion, Halloween, “spring break events,” and pornography shops. On its website, Repent has posted a “Warfare Map” of its enemies in town.

And they don't like Buddhists one bit. If you look at the map in the link, for example, at the green push-pin in the upper right hand corner they've "targeted" Wat Lao Buddharam as a place where they have identified as having "idol worship" and a "false god."

And if you read their "Mission" page clearly they think it's within their "mission" to harass non-Christians, and that includes Buddhists.

I hope people of all religions and non-religions can join together to help expose this group for what it is.

These people, AOG, are the same ones who launched a terrorist attack at the Olympics in Atlanta setting off a bomb. Time for the FBI.

I'd agree, if they are consistently harassing people.

The fact that they're soliciting money on the internet for these activities invokes some of those Patriot Act provisions, I'd bet.

Man, where are these nuts coming from? Check this article out about a group here in Virginia.

I mean they aren't as militant, but certainly cause a lot of harm.

Kyle,
Yeah, I'd read about those folks. Amazing how insensitive - and narcissistic - they are.

these guys are really just one family. One whacko and his progeny. Check out boycotthouston.com it's by the same guy. Some rev. something or other. he has no real church it meets in his house and even the meetings aren't consistent. I wrote a piece on my blog about the boycott Houston thing back in January. http://www.chron.com/channel/houstonbelief/commons/bayoubuddhists.html

I can't link to it because the site address is too long. just go back to page 5 of archives if you are interested.

Even if it's just one guy and his progeny, they might increase or encourage others to violence.

Google Army of God and then take a look at their Web site. Nice, eh?

When I was a reporter, I followed closely the Identity movement, which took in many of these theism-based hate groups. Army of God is one of them, and Hate Amarillo is obviously connected, because when you look at its Web site, they assert right at the top it is Army of God.

The thing is, most media is too timid to take on groups like this, because it comes off as looking like you're anti-Christian. The way I reported it, I just simply allowed them to speak and I quoted them accurately. I combed through their documents and quoted them accurately. I visited their Websites and described them accurately. These cretins appreciated that, because I was fair. But I always had a maninstream minister in the bag to comment on these things.

These people have been around since the early 1900s. Henry Ford was a strong advocated of Christian Identity and he supported the Nazis. Their activity rises whenever something happens to pull disenfranchised bigots together. The last time they were truly active was during the Reagan administration, which offered them a cover of legitimacy (it was also the rise of the alleged Moral Majority). Now we have a black president and the atavists are rallying again.

Oh, remember that guy maybe 20 years ago who drove through Illinois and northern Indiana killing people that seemed random? He was Army of God. And that Hale guy convicted in Illinois? Yup, connect with Army of God.

These people and their groups are like the scent of snake shit; really hard to scrub away.

BTW, just happened to find your blog, will be checking back often. Nice.

Sorry, I made an error I need to correct. LOL, I called Repent Amarillo incorrectly Hate Amarillo.

But Richard Hale and that guy that went on a shooting rampage in Indiana were affiliated with the World Church of the Creator, which is just another offshoot of the Christian Identity movement.

Sorry for the error.
